Gay Mexico City is quickly gathering a reputation as one of the best queer travel destinations in Latin America. This is because Mexico City has the power to draw you in and leave you utterly enchanted: whether it’s the complex history, the drama, the creative energy or merely the juxtaposition of high culture with squalor, this city is a magnet for gay travelers.
While we loved exploring the gay side of other Mexican destinations like Cancun, Puebla, Oaxaca, Monterrey, Leon, and Queretaro – only the gay beaches and resorts of Puerto Vallarta or wild gay clubs and neighborhoods of Guadalajara could challenge CDMX for the title of capital of Gay Mexico.
There is the famous Zona Rosa or Pink Zone, Mexico City’s most famous “gay” neighborhood, which may have faded slightly from its glorious and glittery heyday but still draws in the queer crowds as most of the gay bars and clubs are located here.
However, we preferred the more low-key gay scene in the adjacent Roma and Condesa neighborhoods with their gorgeous men, lively cafes, lush parks, beautiful architecture, and chic art galleries. You are only a skip away from a hot sweat night in a gay club, but you can sip lattes and enjoy the finer things in life during the day.
As if the boasts of dozens of gay bars, bars and cafes were not enough, Mexico City was also the first city in Mexico to legalize gay marriage in 2010, solidifying its status as the open-minded, gay mecca in Mexico.
Then there is the annual Mexico City Pride, the biggest in Latin America, with over one million annual participants. Sure, there are some inconveniences with higher crime rates, air pollution, and insane traffic – but Mexico City is busy re-inventing itself, and none of this should not put you off visiting Gay Mexico City.

Attractions in Gay Mexico City
Naturally, being gay does not define which attraction most of us will want to see in each city, and most queer travelers will merely want to check out the top things to see in Mexico City during the day!
Mexico City is a relatively tolerant city, but public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum, especially if you do not have to draw attention. Outright hostility is unlikely, but many Mexicans may be uncomfortable with homosexual displays of affection – although in the more touristy areas and the gay-popular neighborhoods holding hands or kissing is unlikely to even garner a second glance.
Most local guys actually don’t mind being checked out or flirted with even, are as long as their own sense of manhood isn’t disputed, and there’s no risk of standing among family or friends – so you never know when you might get lucky by trying your luck.
This giant metropolis is full of contradictions. Our advice for visitors: Be a gay couple, don’t hide your love but be conscious of those around you when you do.
By doing this, you are unlikely to have issues exploring this beautiful and diverse city, where even the essential list of things do with keeps visitors entertained for days or weeks -gay, straight or unicorn. Here are just a few of our favorites (outside of the gay village…we will get to that!)
One of the wonders of the world, be sure to try to avoid the crowds by heading out on an early morning tour of the magnificent Teotihuacan pyramids, also known as the City of the Gods. Explore the mammoth UNESCO World Heritage site while gazing upon majestic plazas, and murals and snapping memorable shots from the top of the Sun Pyramid and Moon Pyramid.
Visit at the Frida Kahlo Museum, also known as Casa Azul (Blue House), at your own pace. You will be able to see where this world-renowned artist lived with her husband, Diego Rivera, and learn about her tumultuous life.
One of Mexico’s, if not the world’s, greatest painters, a pilgrimage to this feminist and LGBT / bisexual icons house is utterly unmissable and sure to be a highlight of any trip to Gay Mexico.
Just be sure to guarantee your entry to the Frida Kahlo Museum (Museo Frida Kahlo), one of Mexico City’s most popular museums, by booking your admission ticket far in advance. Otherwise, you can be left waiting outside for hours…
Soumaya Museum
One of the best museums in Mexico City, with its iconic architectural form and vast art collection housed within, was founded by Mexico’s richest man, Carlos Slim.
It has over 66,000 works from 30 centuries of art, including sculptures from Pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica, 19th- and 20th-century Mexican art and an extensive repertoire of works by European old masters and masters of modern western art such as Auguste Rodin, Salvador Dalí, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and Tintoretto.
It is considered one of the complete collections of its kind.
Bizarre Museum of Objects
One of the weirdest museums in the world, collecting and curating a fascinating array of almost 100,000 everyday objects. A tribute to the collector – or hoarder – in all of us, we promise you won’t ever have seen something quite like this before.
Luis Barragan House and Studio
Former residence of architect Luis Barragán in the Miguel Hidalgo district, it is now a museum exhibiting Barragán’s work and retains the original furniture and Barragán’s personal objects.
These include a mostly Mexican art collection spanning the 16th to 20th century, with works by Picasso, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, Jesús Reyes Ferreira, and Miguel Covarrubias.
Tickets sell out months in advance, so set your alarm if you want to get a rare guided tour of one of the most influential and representative examples of modern Mexican architecture, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Chapultepec
One of the largest city parks in the Western Hemisphere and the green lungs of Mexico City house many attractions, including Chapultepec Zoo, Chapultepec Castle, the Museum of Anthropology, and the Rufino Tamayo Museum. Perfect for escaping the urban jungle…if only for a minute.
Experience Mexico City with Cantinas, Lucha Libre and Mariachi
Pack in three punches of fun in one night – and discover traditional Mexico. First, dine at a traditional cantina before moving on to an iconic Lucha Libre match. Get lost in the theatrics and cheer on for your favorite masked wrestler until your voice gets hoarse.
Then more to Garibaldi Square, dance to mariachi band music and cap the night off at a pub in the Zocalo. Doesn’t get more authentic than this!
The nightlife in Mexico City is second to none and provides an array of entertainment, but this show — the ‘Best Dance Show of the World in Mexico’ — is not to be missed. Watch a performance of the renowned Mexico City Folkloric Ballet (Ballet Folklorico).
For three hours, you’ll be mesmerized by dance choreography from Mexico’s past and today, and you’ll find the onstage energy and dancers in their vibrant costumes infectious.
Floating Gardens of Xochimilco
Experience a somewhat unexpected ecological reserve and UNESCO World Heritage site, located just south of Mexico City. Step aboard a ‘trajinera,’ a colorful flat-bottomed boat, and drift through waterways dotted with floating gardens of flowers.
Be sure to take a guide or read up in advance if you are interested in how this former agricultural canal network once fed the Aztec capital that lined the shores of Lake Xochimilco.
National Museum of Anthropology
If you only visit one museum in Mexico City, make sure this is it. The largest and most visited museum in Mexico with the biggest collection of artifacts from Mexico’s pre-Columbian heritage, such as the Stone of the Sun (or the Aztec calendar stone) and the Aztec Xochipilli statue. Simply put, a national treasure of Mexico, and rightfully so. Allow at least 3-4 hours.
Museum of Memory and Tolerance
A world-class museum with contemporary exhibits focussing on problematic social issues and horrific world events such as Holocaust and other global genocides. Located in a sobering seven-story building constructed using a mixture of reinforced concrete and steel, this is one museum that is sure to leave a mark on your soul.
Either take a tour or design your own of the fabulous food markets in Mexico – with so many options, you would be crazy to visit just one! Navigate the bustling markets packed with goods like exotic flowers, traditional piñatas, super hot tamales, handcrafted voodoo dolls, and ‘magic’ love potions.
If you opt for a guided tour, you will also get the inside scoop on the best places to find whatever you’re after. Be sure to take plenty of tasty samples along the way, including Panza Llena and Corazon Contento, guaranteed to leave you with a full stomach and a happy heart.

Gay Nightlife in Mexico City
We are not even sure where to start as the wild gay nightlife in Mexico City took us by surprise, especially given the more conservative attitudes and lack of rainbow flags in Mexico City. Sure, in public, the LGBT community might not be so ‘out and proud’ in Mexico City but in the relative safety of bars and clubs, the gay Mexicans sure know how to let their freak flag fly.
If you become as overwhelmed as we were, the only thing you really need to know is that most of the gay bars are found in Mexico City’s gayest neighborhood, Zona Rosa, and Calle Amberes, in particular, is known for hosting the highest concentration of gay bars and clubs in the city…
This does not mean the Zona Rosa is the only place to spend the night with your global queer family, so don’t be afraid to explore a little further afield.
Mexico City has something for everyone, from utterly over-the-top glitter queer club parties to relaxed pubs and chic cocktail bars, and that is without exploring all the LGBT-friendly options.
If none of these gay venues seem for you, remember many gays in Mexico City don’t feel the need to segregate themselves and can somewhat discreetly be found at fashionable establishments all over town…
But with a gay nightlife scene as fabulous as this, you would be foolish to not sample at least a few of the LGBT venues in Mexico City…
A fashionable new gay club with excellent service, cheapish drinks, and beautiful bartender models. Expect plenty of young gays with their fag hags bopping away to the latest alt-pop hits and chart toppers with bright pink drinks, neon lights, and fierce unicorn realness. Yes, we are absolutely in love, as you can imagine!

Nothing at all like Gay Vienna, this simple gay Mexican cantina is the place for beer, tequila, and an unpretentious crowd – with excellent service.
An animated gay bar with hilarious drag queens, cute bartenders, and fun crowds. The best gay place in Zona Rosa to head to late at night, with more upscale vibes and slightly higher prices, but we think they were wholly justified. Kinky Bar also draws in a crowd of young, hip and beautiful with a good mix of LGBT boys and girls to dance the night away with.
There are a few different atmospheres to enjoy here depending on the night and room, with first-level karaoke and Latino music and a roof terrace with more dancey music. There is also a place to smoke and socialize outside, plus some ridiculously hot go-go dancers on the weekend. What more could you possibly want in a gay bar?
Our personal favorite gay bar in the Zona Rosa, with three epic floors offering everything we ever dreamed and desired. Hot as hell go-go dancers, shower shows, huge dance floors, dance, electronic and house music, plus an outdoor terrace and reasonable price drinks.
Boy Bar gets packed and is only for us boys, so ladies – sorry, but this one is not for you! Choose your own adventure type of bar, which will have you returning time and time again.
Drrama By 42

One of the most popular gay bars in the Zona Rosa area has recently undergone a huge renovation. The interior is somehow both stylish and has an intimate cave-like atmosphere, with reasonable prices and a mixed crowd of mostly younger gay locals. There is no cover charge, so Drama By 42 often gets packed out with plenty of entertainment each night, ranging from karaoke and drag to comedy or live music.
One of CDMX’s oldest mezcalerías and the best place to go to try delightful mezcal cocktails – there are over 50 on offer or beers for those who can’t stand the stuff. A core part of the Mexico City gay community for years with friendly waiters, fun karaoke and a fun crowd on the weekends when the dance floor gets packed. A great place to start the night off and see where things lead.
BB Show Bar

A gay show bar with muscular male strippers who are very willing to provide private shows for the right amount of pesos. Small and hot, but like all strip-style bars, it depends on who is on the stage that night.
An epic of a somewhat posh gay club in swanky Polanco with an electronic house, pop, and retro music. Only open on Saturdays, with pricey prices and a cover charge, but there are a super fun vibe, very friendly people and awesome music blasting all night long. The only downside is smoking is allowed.
A simple men-only cowboy bar with fun social events and occasional theme parties. We are always partial to a gay cowboy hoe-down – so this was just like visiting Austin, Denver or Nashville but with a heavy dose of the high-octane Mexican party spirit. A nice place to dance salsa and cumbia while enjoying North Mexico music.
One of the oldest gay clubs in Mexico, with cheap drinks and some of the best pop soundtracks in Gay Mexico. Marrakech Salon, however, is a victim of its own success and frequently gets just too crowded – so get ready to be felt up and be rubbed up by hot and sweaty bodies later at night.
A fabulous gay club in the Zona Rosa for those who like to flirt while dancing the night away with their queer family. A mixture of drag, comedy, different dance music and cheap drinks make this a very popular hang-out for the young LGBT community in Mexico City.
For lesbians, Tuesday night is most popular, but you will be welcome every night of the week (except Sunday-Monday when they are closed).
A fabulous place to go to drink cheap drinks, high-energy drag shows, cinema, strippers and a fun night with a wholly Mexican flavor.
La Suite Club

A vast gay EDM dance club in the Zona Rosa spread across two floors. They open late, so it arrives after midnight, and there is always a cover, depending on the DJ that night.
The only leather fetish bar in Mexico City, and one of the few gay bars outside the gay area. Still, Tom’s has an almost cult following with its kinky interior, dark rooms, adult films playing and sexy go-go dancers/strippers.
Doors open at 9 pm most nights, with different promos on different days before 11 pm. Cover normally includes some beer tickets, but admission is free on Tuesday, making it one of the most popular nights, along with Friday and Saturday.

Woof woof! Another exclusively male-only bar in Gay CDMX catering to bears, otters, wolves, daddies, and all their admirers. Very relaxed and slightly cruisey, with low prices and fantastic service. A nice place to drink beers with bears…

A gay-popular theatre, bar and cabaret venue in the Zone Rosa with shows most nights – consult their website for times. Well-hidden and rather cozy, with a modern design, a welcoming atmosphere, and super accessible prices.
A large gay club popular with young students as a space for imagination, creativity, and respect. Open to all, popular house and techno music spins until the early morning across the two floors and balcony bar here. Affordable drinks, fabulous people and an atmosphere where you can find it all!
Gay Sauna in Mexico City
Had enough of gay cruising in Mexico City – either in the bars or elsewhere? If you desire a bit more guaranteed action, the gay saunas in Mexico City will not disappoint you (unlikely all those faceless accounts on Grindr or the other hookup apps…).
With a bit of basic Spanish, you should have no issues visiting any of the Mexico City gay saunas, though it is always a bit of a lucky dip in terms of who you might find.
There is actually a huge variety of bathhouses, many of which are little more than massage parlors where fun can occur, so we have only recommended our two favorites. One is very traditionally Mexican, and one seeks to emulate the gay sauna experience of Europe or the US.
