LGBTQ+ Rights In The USA

The laws governing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people have altered considerably over time in the United States and vary from state to state. In many ways, LGBT rights are some of the best in the world – but the devil is in the detail, and some places are much more hostile to queer life than others.

While same-sex marriage has been legal in every state since the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges ruling on June 26, 2015 (before Obergefell v. Hodges, same-sex marriage was legal in 36 states and Washington, D.C. ), LGBT people are still treated differently in different states – both societally and as inequality under the law.

Over half of all states still allow discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, while counties and cities within states often have distinct laws as well. While some states permit adoption by all couples, others forbid it for all unmarried couples.

This is all to say what most of us already know is that LGBT rights and equality differ greatly across the USA, and the specifics of family, marriage and anti-discrimination laws are different in every state.

Thus, while it is comforting to know that you can choose to marry whoever you love across the USA (and have it recognized as such) and are protected against hate crimes based on sexual orientation or gender identity (which can be punished under Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009), there are still many questions you will likely have about moving to California and what you can expect of LGBT life there.

Does California Embrace The LGBTQ Community?

When it comes to LGBT rights, which have gained national recognition since the 1970s, the state is regarded as one of the country’s most liberal states.  Since 1976, same-sex relationships have been permitted in the state. In 2003, the state passed laws prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity or expression and sexual orientation.

The legal gender of transgender people can also be changed on their official documents without the need for any medical treatment, and mental health professionals aren’t allowed to give minors conversion therapy.

The Census Bureau started a series of national surveys in July 2021 that included inquiries about gender identity and sexual orientation. Results are noteworthy, particularly for California. The state has the most significant population of LGBT people in the country at 2.7 million!

In comparison to the rest of the country at 7.9%, California has a much greater percentage of adults that identify as LGBT at 9.1%. Furthermore, this figure is higher compared to other states with a large population. The LGBT community in the state encompasses a wide variety of identities, some of which aren’t represented in the census data.

This information shows that, like the rest of the US, about half 49%- of LGBT adults in California identify as bisexual.36% of people said they identify as gay or lesbian, and 15% said they identify as transgender. There are 722,000 more men who identify as gay as opposed to lesbians 257,000.

In contrast to this, nearly three times as many women 928,000 as males 363,000 identify as bisexual. California has consistently worked to make sure it is inviting and welcoming to those who feel unwelcome or marginalized in other locations.

Is California An Expensive State To Move To

Everything is more expensive in California: housing, utilities, food, and even transportation. California has a $46,636 average cost of living per year. Based on this sum, a month’s worth of living expenses in California would come to $3,886. Here is how those are divided into the principal types of spending.

Purchasing a home, especially in California, may be very expensive. The state’s average sale price for a home is an astounding $898,980. For the majority of citizens of the state, purchasing a home is not a viable option at that price, which is up 10% since May 2021. For comparison, the annual income needed to purchase a home at California’s median price is $180,000, which is higher than its median household income.  The average rental price for a two-bedroom property in the state is a hefty $2,274 per month, ranking it as the fourth costliest in the nation. More than 30% of California’s renters’ income goes toward paying their rent.

Costs are generally inexpensive for Californians. The Save on Energy Electricity Bill Report from March 2022 states that Californians use an average of 572 kWh each month. A monthly average electricity bill of $101.48 is the consequence of their average cost of 23.22 cents per kWh. For comparison, Hawaii has the highest average monthly bill- at $191.01, while Utah has the lowest average monthly bill at $78.13. The average price in the United States is $122.79.

An adult without children needs a living wage of approximately $38,822 before taxes. The amount spent on food accounts for $3,790 of the yearly income. However, since this is a basic living wage calculation, it excludes luxury. In places like San Luis Obispo, known for its vibrant LGBT community and higher-than-average cost of living, these food costs might be slightly higher, reflecting the area’s diverse culinary scene and the increased expenses associated with living in this picturesque and inclusive part of California.

You’ll need insurance if you want to drive and own a car in the state. California has the 4th-highest average yearly premium at $1,960. This is greater than $500 over the $1,426 national average. There are different options for public transportation. However, the prices differ depending on where you go. For instance, a transit pass in Los Angeles costs $100 a month. The cost of a monthly transit pass in the San Francisco area is between $80 to $98.

San Francisco

San Francisco naturally tops the list of California’s most LGBT-friendly cities. The Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index awarded the city a top rating since it has the highest proportion of LGBT residents. Since 1972, San Francisco has hosted Pride events, drawing more than 1.5 million visitors in a single year.

The Castro District in the city, which features LGBT-owned shops, Harvey Milk Plaza, and the LGBT Walk of Fame, is unquestionably the core of the LGBT community. Pink Saturday Street Party and t The International LGBT Film Fest are two frequent events that locals take part in. San Francisco also hosted the first lesbian rights organization in the nation and the first openly gay candidate for public office.

Also known as The City by the Bay, San Francisco is one of the most queer-friendly cities with lots of LGBT-owned and LGBT-friendly businesses all over. Visit the GLBT History Museum or take a “Cruisin’ the Castro” walking tour to discover more about the evolution of the gay movement.

Up to a million tourists descend on the city over the final weekend of June for the yearly amazing San Francisco Pride celebration, which marks the end of Pride Month.  The Hotel Whitcomb, The Parker Guest House, and Joie de Vivre Hotels are just a handful of the city’s LGBT-friendly hotels. If you’re new to the city’s queer scene, Twin Peaks Tavern and Lookout are renowned hangouts.

One of the biggest and most well-known LGBT communities in the nation is located in San Francisco. There are gay-friendly neighborhoods, streets decorated with rainbow flags, and some of the most well-known LGBT festivals.

Los Angeles

There is no denying the diversity and star power of Los Angeles, and moving here is a move undertaken by countless queers (and doubtlessly countless more will continue in the future). There are seemingly limitless recreational opportunities in addition to a wealth of information for would-be LGBT residents to make a smooth transition. The country’s largest LGBT sports league is the Varsity Gay League which is home here, while Equality California is also based in this city. In terms of population, Los Angeles also hosts the most Pride activities in the country.

The LGBTQ+ community in Los Angeles began to flourish with the end of World War II, much like in many other enclaves for the LGBTQ community in the country. One of the draws for the queer community for a long time here has been the silver screen. Hollywood, on the other hand, was still discreet and made some LGBT individuals keep their lifestyles a secret while simultaneously suppressing homosexuality.

Despite this, West Hollywood is still the greatest neighborhood in Los Angeles for those in the LGBT community. The LGBT population in the area makes up more than 40% of the total population, and the nightlife is fantastic. It is no secret that West Hollywood, the epicenter of Los Angeles’ LGBTQ+ community, also has top-notch eateries, lodging options, and retail establishments nearby.

Pop into the Abbey, one of the most well-known gay nightclubs and bars in the world, when it comes to nightlife. Alternatively, if you want a more underground vibe, pump up the music at the appropriately titled Girl Bar or check out Fubar. Drag queen bingo nights, conducted each Sunday at Hamburger Mary’s, are a great way to round off the weekend.

The One City One Pride celebration offers free events all across the city in May, since the L.A. Pride Festival and Parade moved to West Hollywood in June.

Palm Springs

Palm Springs is a popular LGBT tourist destination in the United States because of its thriving gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. There are numerous gay-friendly hotels, activities, and entertainment options in the area. Additionally, Palm Springs is home to the country’s very first all-LGBT city council.

With occasions like the White Party and Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend, the city has a particularly strong lesbian presence. Toucans Tiki Lounge, The Terra Cotta Resort, and Starlite Lounge, which also serves as a clothing-optional, adults-only housing alternative, are a few of Palm Springs’ top gay bars.

Palm Springs really boasts more LGBT homes per capita than all other California cities, despite the fact that it is still somewhat costly. You can be sure that finding LGBT companions will be an easy thing as more than 8% of all homes in this area are same-sex. This also means that the education system is particularly welcoming to kids from same-sex families.

However, Palm Springs also offers a sizable number of gay events. The Dinah, the world’s biggest lesbian festival, and the White Party, the biggest LGBTQIA+ event worldwide, are some of the city’s Pride events. The diversity of Palm Springs is often overlooked.

Palm Springs has recently experienced a wave of new residents, notably young couples and celebrities, despite its longstanding reputation as a paradise for retirees looking for a first-class lifestyle at a reduced cost.

Additionally, the city is a symbol of equality for the queer community. Palm Springs is a few hours away from L. A and has made big contributions to LGBT history more than most of the surrounding cities, thanks to its popularity as an enclave for popular and wealthy LGBT celebrities.

Finding Gay Realtors In California

When looking for the ideal realtor, why would you consider someone’s sexuality? This may seem strange at first, but there are several reasons why contacting a gay realtor in California is a great way to find your dream house.

After all, when it relates to one of life’s most significant transactions, it’s not unreasonable to expect fair, equal, and honest representation from someone who understands the queer community’s particular needs and wishes.

Furthermore, unfortunately, many people (up to a third of Americans) believe that our community does not deserve protection and dignity in housing, adoption, employment, and other areas of life.

So it’s no surprise that LGBT people who use mainstream realtors often describe feelings of discomfort, unnecessary trouble, unenthusiastic representation, or even antagonism or outright contempt.

Everyone deserves a pleasant, stress-free home buying or selling experience while being adequately represented, and this is why we feel you should hire a gay realtor to assist you in finding your future home.

LGBTQ realtors are more likely to be familiar with the diverse communities in their area and know which ones may be best suited to you when looking for a home.

That’s not to say a heterosexual realtor isn’t capable, but they’ve probably never had to address many of the issues LGBT people face. Rather than just being concerned with how bustling, fashionable, or up-and-coming a neighborhood is (or what it may appear like), gay realtors conduct extensive research into the neighborhoods in which they sell homes to ensure that clients are safe.

It used to be challenging to locate professional LGBT-friendly real estate agents in California, and it was virtually impossible to find one if you were relocating here from out of state and didn’t have access to a local referral.

You no longer have to search for a realtor without knowing whether or not they are accepting of others because you can use a list of gay, lesbian, and gay-friendly agents in California to do all of your homework for you.

Simply go to the page, and you’ll be presented with a free list of gay, lesbian, and gay-friendly agents who can help you with your relocation, as well as other useful information like LGBT+friendly schools, shopping, storage firms, tradespeople, and more.

Read the biographies of LGBT real estate agents, then choose the one who is right for you. It’s critical that you find someone who will be by your side and support you and your family during one of life’s most exciting occasions.

Even better, there is no hidden motive, cost, or obligation whatsoever!
