Gay Tucson, USA | The Essential LGBT Travel Guide!

Gay Tucson, USA | The Essential LGBT Travel Guide!

Tucson is an unlikely gay haven in Arizona with a giant list of gay bars and nightclubs, amongst other things. So if you are looking for a fun queer adventure into a city labeled the City of Gastronomy in the USA, you will have a brilliant time.

You can get thrown into the heart of this expansive metropolitan city with a population of half a million and experience an endless selection of unique attractions and activities you’ll be pressed to find elsewhere in Arizona. Making it a fun-filled gay adventure waiting to happen.

Tucson is the second largest city in Arizona, behind Pheonix, and was founded in the 18th century as a Spanish fortress. Over the centuries, since being the massive city we see today, however, well before European contact, the region was part of the territory of Native American tribes for over fourteen-thousands years.

This rich history is evident when you walk the streets of Tucson, whether the massive cathedrals and ruins left over during the Spanish missionary era or the more recent 20th-century establishments of neon lights from restored theatres. But you don’t need to fear a trip to Tucson being only about history. Tucson resides close to the incredible Saguaro National Park.

It is a perfect base for exploring life in the desert and getting amazing photos with giant cacti out in the open. So we have a city that has so much on offer and more. You have to step inside to discover its magic.

Attractions in Gay Tucson, USA

As a new visitor to Gay Tucson, there are many things to see and do, regardless of your sexual orientation. One of the best ways to experience any new city is to visit some of its most iconic landmarks and attractions, including historical monuments, museums, and art galleries.

We also love gazing at architecture up close, exploring parks and gardens, sampling the local cuisine, visiting local markets, and attending cultural events such as festivals, concerts and shows.

Even as the out-and-proud queer we are, we still love to explore the city and its culture in the same way as everyone else. Doing so allows us to learn more about the city and its people and better understand the local culture. As such, these are our favorite must-see attractions in Tucson.

Trail Dust Town

Inside Tucson is the fun and informative Trail Dust Town, a shopping experience like none other designed in the shape of an old west town.  Started in 1961 as a dream project today, you can experience a townscape as something out of the 19th century with modern-day shops from a gift shop and an artist’s gallery inside historic wooden buildings.

During the day, you can shop, take old-timey photos, taste-test local sweets, take a spa, pan for gold, and test your skill at their shooting gallery. Then when evening comes, you may be around for their weekly Friday entertainment show, The Pistoleros Wild West Show, or dine at their Pinnacle Peak home to the famous steakhouse.

Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill

At the top of Tumamoc Hill, just outside Tucson, is the desert laboratory, a history research facility built in 1903. Made to study how plants survive the arid conditions of deserts, it has contributed a lot of material to help push our understanding of botany and plant evolution.

However, even if you aren’t a botanist, you can enjoy the trip up to the summit of Turmamoc, taking in the incredible views on arrival at the top. It is also a great shaded area for a picnic as you take photos and prepare for the return journey down.

San Xavier del Bac Mission

One of the oldest churches in Tucson that stands as a relic of the Spanish missionary past is San Xavier del Bac, built-in 1797. This momentous structure is an iconic tower in the Tucson landscape, with two white towers framing the central church building and the whole design and facade. It is a solid example of American-Spanish architecture at the turn of the 18th century in Arizona and is great for photos or a Sunday church service.

A great night out is always on the table when you visit the Gaslight Theatre, a popular local theatre group that loves entertaining through original adaptions on popular media. Since 1977 they have given local actors a chance to gain experience in the acting gig through light-hearted shows to a mixed crowd.

Whether child or adult, they aim to make people laugh, smile and cry with various shows that change every few months. You may be in town when they have the Thor shows or their own Tucson adaptation of the Little Mermaid, so what better way to fill in a few hours at night with some fun put on by the locals?

Coronado National Forest

This national forest is a great way to get out of town, go for a hike, and see what the wilderness of Arizona has to offer. You may even be lucky to spot some wildlife hiking up the mountain peaks to see incredible views. It is not abnormal to see a bobcat or Gila Monster during a suitable climate, but if you do see them, best keep your distance and admire animals in their natural habitat.

The Shelter Cocktail Lounge

One of the unique nightlife experiences that celebrate retro 1960s American culture is the Shelter Cocktail Lounge. This is fitted out of a former Fallout shelter. However, thankfully not one out of the Fallout series, but something much more practical. Even if we never got atomic war during the Cold War, we can gladly still celebrate today the strange and classic spaces the red scare left behind.

This place is a history nerd heaven with antique lights, a lovingly designed bar and dining area, and the decor reminds you of where you are visiting. You can make a night out of it by dressing like you were from 1960 and feeling like you are traveling back in time for the evening.

Cruising & Gay Saunas In Tucson, USA

The gay cruising zone is not a massive part of the queer night experience in Tucson; they have a gay men’s massage offering the most incredible full-body experience that isn’t erotic or sexual but refreshing your mind and body.

But if you want some naughty fun typical of cruising, you must rely on dating apps, social events or the various gay venues sprayed throughout the city to fill these needs. Luckily the gay scene is thriving, so you won’t have to try too hard to find a worthy partner.

When traveling to a new city, it can be exciting to head out for more than just a stiff drink. One aspect of the Gay Tucson scene that many queer men enjoy is visiting gay saunas and cruising clubs.

Sure, the sauna culture in Tucson is not as hedonistic as in Amsterdam, Barcelona or Berlin, but these venues still offer a chance to meet new people, socialize, and engage in sexual activity – without resorting to gay hookup apps.

However, it’s important to remember that these venues can vary greatly in terms of atmosphere, clientele, and rules, so preparing yourself before visiting is a good idea. If you are apprehensive, we advise studying our guide to visiting a gay bathhouse for the first time, which should help set your mind at ease and always practice safe sex.

Additionally, it’s important to be aware of and respect local laws and customs regarding gay venues and sexual activity. With a little planning and an open mind, visiting gay saunas and cruising clubs can be a fun and exciting part of your gay Tucson travel itinerary.
