Gay Xalapa, Mexico | The Essential LGBT Travel Guide!

Gay Xalapa, Mexico | The Essential LGBT Travel Guide!

Over the last few years, Mexico has seen a higher-than-average hostility toward the LGBT community. In the past, there have been reports of assaults occurring in gay bars in the Mexican city of Xalapa.

Xalapa is the capital city of the Mexican state of Veracruz. It is a college town in the highlands above the hot and humid Veracruz coast and has some beautiful colonial architecture. The climate in the highlands is also quite pleasant.

Because of the city’s primary educational institution, Universidad Veracruzana, and its significant cultural impact, Xalapa is frequently referred to as the “Athens of Veracruz” (the main public university in the State of Veracruz).

Theaters, museums, and even street art are all part of Xalapa’s vibrant cultural scene, which hosts various events. Many musicians and dancers regularly perform in the center during the evenings, especially on special occasions and commemorative events; the fandango is one of the most popular dances performed there.

Xalapa is the vibrant capital city of the state of Veracruz, and it is a lovely city to include on your Mexico itinerary. Veracruz is one of the most populous states in Mexico. The population’s average age is relatively low due to the presence of significant universities.

You’d be smitten by the wonderful atmosphere, the friendly locals, the abundance of vegan restaurants and coffee shops, and, last but not least, the city’s extraordinary number of green spaces.

Because of its highland location, Xalapa has a more temperate and frequently overcast climate than the humid coastal city of Veracruz. The city is known for its unconventional atmosphere and large student population, contributing to its vibrant nightlife and thriving cultural scene. Gay visitors to Xalapa will discover that the city has a lot to offer them.

Anthropology Museum

The Museo de Antropologa de Xalapa houses an impressive collection of artifacts from the Olmec, Huastec, and Totonac cultures, all of which originated on Mexico’s gulf coast. The massive Olmec heads are virtually impossible to miss. On the other hand, the smaller Totonac sculptures and other artifacts will captivate you with their quirky, comical expressions!

The museum’s interpretive signs are only available in Spanish; however, you can rent an iPod with English translations for each exhibit for a small fee. After your tour, unwind on the expansive grassy lawn, which is ideal for having a picnic on warm days.

Centro Histórico

The historic district of Xalapa, known as the Centro histórico, is stunning. Despite its small size, spending significant time wandering the Callejones, exploring the parks, and going in and out of restaurants and coffee shops is possible.

If you’re a photographer, this place will make you feel like you’ve died and gone to heaven. The colonial buildings stand out even more against the backdrop of the distant verdant mountains. It is strongly advised that you begin your exploration of the area at Parque Juarez and work your way outward.

Ex Hacienda El Lencero Museum

It is highly recommended that you visit this Spanish colonial hacienda outside of Xalapa. The first owner of the hacienda was one of the Spanish soldiers who served under Hernán Cortes during the conquest of Mexico. The hacienda was purchased in 1842 by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, a military general who would become President of Mexico not once, not twice, but eleven times.

Santa Anna would go on to be president eleven times (despite doing a terrible job the first ten times). Santa Anna had a long and distinguished political career in Mexico, but one of his most notable “claims to fame” was the repeal of the Mexican constitution in 1835.

This action sparked the Texas Revolution, culminating in Texas declaring independence from Mexico. Santa Anna had a long and distinguished political career. El Lencero contains several artifacts and documents related to Santa Anna’s military career and the Texas Revolution.

The hacienda grounds include a beautiful garden and a swimming pool connected to a beautiful pond that is home to ducks and geese. The hacienda itself is stunning, and it is filled with antique furniture from the period.

In addition, there are a few old-fashioned carriages and wagons on the property; these would be even more interesting if horses pulled them, but alas, they do not have any animals of that kind attached to them. The hacienda is a stunning location, and visiting it is a wonderful way to spend a few hours away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Cathedral

Although it was built in the middle of the seventeenth century, it has undergone numerous changes, and his style is now considered eclectic. Today, very little of the original church remains. The other of its towers houses a watch brought from England, while the first is unfinished.

The interior was ransacked in 1977, so there aren’t many images or sacred art to admire. However, the structure includes a chapel dedicated to Saint Rafael Guizar Valencia, a man beatified by Pope John Paul II.

Macuiltépetl Ecological Park

This park, which covers 40 hectares and is located north of the city, is the forested summit of an extinct volcano. The park’s paths are a treasure for the city’s thriving jogger community, offering expansive views of Xalapa and the surrounding area. The paths that spiral up to the park’s top are hidden gems. The park has an observation platform and a small botanical museum, open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Parque Juárez

The central main square of Parque Juárez Xalapa also functions as a terrace, with its south side looking out over the valley below and, on a clear day, the snowcapped cone of Pico de Orizaba beckoning in the distance.

There are monkey puzzle trees and manicured hedges among the shoe shiners, snack stalls, balloon sellers, and wandering minstrels, making this plaza greener and better kept than most other plazas in Mexico.

Look for the El Gora de la Ciudad gallery, which also shows art-house films, the giant mosaic sculpture of the plumed serpent Quetzalcoatl, which also serves as a climbing frame and slides for children, and the 1931 Virtues sculptures, which include fortitude, justice, foresight, and moderation.

Teatro Del Estado

Xalapa is an important cultural center because it is both the state capital and a bustling university town. The Teatro del Estado, also known as the State Theatre, hosts many performances, including symphony concerts, internationally renowned comedians, theater groups, musicians, and more. Attending one of the various performances in Xalapa is highly recommended.

Callejones

Although the Callejones in Xalapa, also known as alleys in English, are not as congested or narrow as those in Guanajuato, they are well worth exploring if you find yourself in Xalapa.

Because most of the Callejones are residential, they provide excellent photographic opportunities because they are lined with beautifully painted homes with rustic wooden doors. Callejón de Rojas and Callejón Jess te Ampare are two of the most beautiful, but there are plenty more to discover as you walk around Xalapa.

Naolinco

This town, located to the north of Xalapa, is well-known because it hosts one of the most significant festivals in the area. Men dress up in mascara at this festival and engage in a pitched battle known as the blackening.

During September, the traditional dances of Santiago, the Moors, and the Christians are also performed here. Do not miss the chance to visit one of its traditional shops, where the locals specialize in handcrafting leather goods.

Los Berros Park

This park is ideal for those looking for a park with various activities and excellent views, as it meets both criteria. Trees surround the park and have a very peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal place to unwind and recharge your batteries.

You can spend the day in the park riding around on rented bicycles and admiring the natural surroundings in the park’s vicinity. Delicious snacks and refreshing beverages are available for purchase within the park.

Because of everything it offers, the park is ideal for spending a warm afternoon or evening with the entire family because it is easy to get to. Have a fantastic time while visiting Parque Los Berros.

Gay-Friendly Bars and Clubs in Xalapa

The following establishments are widely regarded as being among the best LGBT-welcoming bars and clubs in Xalapa, Mexico:

Tierra Luna

Tierra Luna is both a cafe and a theater, so there’s a good chance you’ll be able to see a show while you’re there. They frequently organize events and workshops, such as tango nights and evenings spent listening to live music, among other things.

The menu at the restaurant includes a wide range of traditional Mexican dishes, all of which are excellent in their own right. This is a great place for lunch or dinner, and even if there isn’t a special event, you can still enjoy a relaxing meal in their beautiful, roomy dining room with colonial-style decor!

Asadero Cien

If you like tacos, you should try Asadero Cien. This well-known restaurant began as a modest taco shop with only four seating areas in Xalapa. They are now running the city as a large, modern restaurant chain with locations throughout the city.

They’re famous for their carne asada tacos but also have a lengthy menu of delectable options. There isn’t a single item on the menu that will disappoint you. Don’t forget to order some Azteca sopa.

Tacos Tom-Mix

If you like tacos al pastor, you’re going to love Tom-Mix. It’s your typical taco joint, with a trompo out front and a small dining area inside. After examining Xalapa’s pastor offerings, you will notice that Tom-Mix has consistently remained the favorite of many tourists for several years.

La Lola Pizzas

Lola is one of the favorite places to go for a romantic evening out with your significant other. They serve delicious pizza and excellent service, and inventive and flavorful cocktails.

They also have live music on certain nights of the week. Lola is a pleasant place to spend an evening if you are willing to forego tacos for a while. Visit their Facebook page to learn more about their current promotions and upcoming theme nights.

La Chiva

Because of its relaxed atmosphere, this bar is ideal for pre-or post-dinner drinks. A combination of candlelight and glimmering string lights illuminates only a few tables. The vast majority of the space is open air. The menu includes a variety of alcoholic beverages, such as beer and cocktails, as well as a few botanas, which are appetizers, so you won’t have to imbibe on an empty stomach.

Cool Coffee Spots in Xalapa

El Cafe-Tal

This is not only a great place to get a tasty cup of coffee but also one of my favorite brunch spots in Xalapa. The restaurant is housed in a recently renovated old house that serves as the establishment’s home.

As a result, three distinct dining rooms are located upstairs, giving the impression of an intimate speakeasy, although this establishment is far from a well-kept secret. If you go there for breakfast, they have great deals called paquetes, including an entrée, coffee, and orange juice for a very low price (less than $5).

El Cafe-Tal - Cool Coffee Spots in Xalapa

Kariva Café

Kariva is one of the best coffee shops in Xalapa because of its prime location in the historic center. They roast their coffee on-site, giving it a full-bodied, perfectly balanced flavor. The coffee shop has a relaxed, cozy atmosphere, dim lighting, and plush seating. It’s where you can curl up with a book or your laptop and work in peace.

Flor 14

Flor 14, another repurposed home cafe, has several distinct areas where customers can enjoy their meals or coffee. These areas include a covered patio with many plants, a library room, a charming mezzanine, and much more!

This establishment, a genuine combination of a cafe and a gallery, occasionally hosts readings or concerts with live music. The chocolate Oaxaquea is why many customers come here, and you should do the same. It would be a shame to miss out on this delectable hot chocolate with cinnamon.

LGBT Rights in Xalapa, Mexico

LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) rights have grown in Mexico in recent years, mirroring trends in legal systems worldwide. The intellectual influence of the French Revolution and the brief French control of Mexico was a driving force behind the decision to remove same-sex sexual practices from the Napoleonic Code’s list of prohibited behaviors.

The Napoleonic Code influenced this decision (1862-1877). Sexual acts and practices between people of the same gender have since become legal due to this ruling, which made sexual acts and practices between people of the same gender legal.

On the other hand, people who engage in immoral or obscene behavior in public places risk facing legal consequences because such behavior is illegal in public places. These individuals risk prosecution because such behavior is illegal in public places.
