Well-known and respected despite its diminutive size, the city-state of Singapore is one of the most beloved travel destinations in the entirety of Asia and has earned this reputation through a strong dedication to modernization and a hands-on government approach both when it comes to the people of the county and to that of other lands.
But how does all the traveling hype live up when it comes to queer visitors? Can gay arrivals in the country feel welcomed as a whole, and – most importantly for this article – can they find a wonderful, luxurious, and friendly gay hotels in Singapore to base their visit from?
Although the decriminalization of homosexuality in technicality for Singapore is only a recent development, and even though there aren’t currently any anti-discrimination laws the help gay people in place, the future of Singapore is looking incredibly bright for queer travelers when one compares it with rest of Asia as a whole, and the apparent dedication of its government straightens this fact.
In the words of the country’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in 2020, “This [the repealing of the laws criminalizing homosexuality] is the right thing to do, and something that most Singaporeans will agree with is that gay people are now better accepted”. We won’t be getting married or holding widespread parades in Singapore for some time, but it’s a good start!
But how does the hotel scene look in Singapore? As is true with many hyper-modernized Asian countries, space and size is a highly prized commodities in Singapore, so travelers can expect larger rooms to come with appropriately larger price tags. It makes sense, after all, as the city constitutes an entire country, and even so, Singapore doesn’t take up that much space.
That isn’t to say that establishments skimp out on other amenities and accommodation benefits, however. The truth is – in most cases – very much the opposite. Many hotels in both the center and the surroundings of Singapore are as top-notch and international-ready as the city itself and offer cutting-edge services both when it comes to comfort and when it comes to ease, and convenience.
Now for our usual disclaimer, which applies here even better than it does for most of the other hotel lists we curate. Obviously, in most cases, there aren’t going to be hotels out there marketed directly towards gay people or queer people in general.
We know that, and therefore we’d like to note that the hotels on this list follow the same logic. Most of them have been listed as accommodating, friendly, and unjudgmental to, for, and by queer people in general, as well as being highly rated in general.
So, with all that said, and with Singapore’s shining skyline in mind, it’s time to jet off for one of the most modernized city centers in the world. Get your bags packed and your itinerary lined as we are about to embark on a fabulous journey into the world of gay hotels in Singapore!
In this article we will cover...
M Hotel
Starting this list strongly, even though it sits in the middle of both price range and stars, the M Hotel is a four-star hotel with a strong backbone to back up its services and a wonderful staff track record too.
The M Hotel is marketed as business accommodation, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t equally useful – if not more so – for casual travelers hoping to see Singapore’s best for the first time or to stay for a moment while passing through.
The Tanjong Pagar neighborhood that the M Hotel finds itself in is quite famous for its international influences and various mixtures of culture, and this blending of countries manifests itself wonderfully through the area’s clubs, bars, and eateries, no matter what form they might take.
The highlight of the nearby blocks is the Maxwell Road Food Centre, a hub for countless cuisines for people from all walks of life. Even if you’re not a massive foodie, you’re still sure to find something to enjoy in this district of Singapore!
Still not satisfied, or would you rather remain in your hotel between trips out to enjoy the nightlife during the evening? No problem! The M Hotel has two dedicated in-house restaurants on its property, not to mention a café and a bar area if you’re looking for someplace to lounge and relax.
Or, if you want to let some stress out, you can also spend some time in the M Hotel’s pool, dedicated spa area, complete fitness center, or the hot tub included with most rooms. The M Hotel ticks all boxes and is quite dynamic and satisfactory for all uses, even though it is the very first hotel on this list.
Carlton City Hotel
Taking up both the spot for a second hotel on this list and the spot for the second luxury hotel as well, the Carlton City Hotel is a chic luxury hotel that towers over the Singapore skyline like a pillar of indulgence, allowing guests to get some of the best possible views of the inner city from the inside.
The Carlton is also in the Tanjong Pagar neighborhood like the M Hotel before it, but finds itself a little closer to the edge than that particular establishment, allowing just a little taste of the gentler, more residential areas of the city to seep through into the views from the hotel’s windows and balconies.
Some suites in the Carlton have extended living spaces and separate dining rooms, whereas all have access to minibars, luxurious hot tubs, and laundry amenities.
Suppose you’re not one to stay in your room. In that case, however, there’s also the hotel’s club lounge – accessible only to guests – and the Carlton’s not one but two cocktail bars, one of which hooks directly into the hotel’s glorious outdoor pool and well-kept public seating area. There’s that, or the included fitness studio and the restaurant downstairs. Take your pick: all options are in the palm of your hand!
Previous guests speak very highly about the Carlton, praising the rooms’ design, space, and amenities, as well as the sheer inclusiveness of the hotel’s services and available options.
On top of all this, the reviews state that the Carlton is a lovely spot for couples to spend some time alone holidaying together and a family-friendly spot to bring the whole family along. It suffices to say that no matter what your expectations of Singapore are, you’ll find something of value in the Carlton and its surrounding area.
Hotel 1929
After starting this list with five-star hotels and with not that many cheap options worked through, it’s about time that we came to an affordable option that is as kind to the wallet as it is to the eyes!
Although some people like to embellish their stay a little more and thus find spending their time in barebones hotels like the Hotel 1929 undesirable, it must be said that this establishment doesn’t just make every cent count but also packs a punch in worth comparable to hotels that cost twice as much to stay at.
The Hotel 1929 isn’t an establishment to be dismissed as cheap – it’s just as stylish as the next hotel on this list and certainly contributes strongly to the roster of gay hotels in Singapore regardless of price.
Neighborhood-wise, the Hotel 1929 belongs to the edge of Singapore’s colorful Chinatown district, meaning that guests there will have access to the flavored culture of that district and the larger area of the city as a whole.
There’s also a large cluster of Italian and Greek restaurants nearby, not to mention plenty of trendy bars, so it’s safe to say that no matter what kind of place you like to eat and drink at, there’s an option for you somewhere in the nearby area.
Although the Hotel 1929’s biggest benefits on paper are its location and affordable prices, as we stated earlier, this establishment certainly doesn’t miss out on a few extra plus points either, especially when it comes to its included airport shuttle service, the in-house restaurant. There’s nothing like a place to grab a convenient bite to eat when you don’t have time to go out and look for a restaurant!
Dorsett Singapore
Finally – balance! The Dorsett isn’t quite as inexpensive as the Hotel 1929 before, but if you’re looking for the perfect fusion between convenience, quality, and affordability, this is the place for you. A four-star, high-rise place of accommodation with a stunning front lobby and equally impressive suites, the Dorsett focuses lovingly on the individual needs of its guests.
The Dorsett is located in the same fraction of Singapore’s Chinatown as the Hotel 1929, meaning it has access to a wide range of Asian shopping and culinary culture and the more Western approach of the rest of the city.
If you’re itching to visit other parts of the city, however, you’ll be happy to know that the Dorsett has hooked right into Singapore’s public transit lines thanks to the fact that it’s less than a five-minute walk away from the Outram Park metro station.
Thanks to the city’s modern and efficient transport systems, a single ticket is all you need to put you within reach of everything Singapore offers.
Reviews of the Dorsett speak most strongly regarding the state of the rooms and the helpfulness of the staff, and this impression extends over to the opinions of queer travelers who have stayed at this hotel in the past.
Although it isn’t officially marked on Google as LGBTQ+ supportive, the Dorsett nonetheless has a spotless track record when it comes to respecting the needs of gay guests, as well as an excellent attitude when it comes to issuing resolutions and being there when a guest needs help.
If safety comes first in your mind, or if you’d merely like the safety of mind knowing that someone has your back, then the Dorsett is the place in Singapore for you.
Capella Singapore Hotel
We called the first two hotels on this list – the M Hotel and the Carlton – luxury establishments, but when it comes to the Capella, the word gains a new meaning altogether.
While one might be inclined to flinch a little at this hotel’s price tag – and be rightful in doing so – the second that you start seeing photos of the Capella and reading what it has to offer, you’ll understand exactly why this establishment found a place on the list of Singapore’s best gay hotels.
The outside appearance of the Capella Singapore is stunning alone – looping in two long arches about the edge of a pristine blue pool and the green caress of the trees surrounding it. Things only get better when one explores the hotel’s rooms and notices the sheer space of the individual suites and the number of extra amenities in the public areas.
Not only does the Capella have the usual few ticks with a spa and fitness center arrangement, but it also has a golf course, an in-house restaurant, and – naturally – an outdoor pool with some of the best views in the city. You needn’t worry about getting to the hotel, as the airport shuttle service is included in the bill.
The Capella also has another two advantages – the first of all is the fact that it is officially registered as LGBTQ+ friendly, and the second is the fact that it’s on one of Singapore’s southern islands, which are just disconnected from the main bulk of the city enough to make the location of the Capella feel special, but not enough to make traveling to and fro the city to check out Singapore’s highlights any more difficult than it would if you were staying right in the thick of everything.
Parkroyal Collection Pickering Singapore
Although it’s worlds away from being as expensive as the Capella Singapore Hotel that came before it, the PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering still maintains an absolute cutting edge of luxury and decadence, both in terms of the services that it provides, the amenities that it has available for guests to use, and the aesthetic appeal that the rooms embrace.
One might be led astray to think that the quality of this hotel comes from the fact that it still has those shiny five stars, but the true thing that makes the PARKROYAL special is the location in which it stands.
While we’ve spoken about the Tanjong Pagar and Chinatown neighborhoods when running over earlier hotels in this list, nothing quite measures up to the classical yet strikingly modern appeal of the Outram district.
Although the Outram district borders Chinatown and the Downtown Core, which we’ll speak about later, it is a different world altogether from either of those places – embracing the historical culture of Singapore to the next level and truly immersing those who stay within its borders in the unique experience that the city has to offer.
But enough of the PARKROYAL’s surroundings – what about the hotel itself? Well – as one might expect from the hotel’s five stars and the overview we gave earlier, the PARKROYAL has a lot and more, ranging from an outdoor infinity pool and a spa ensemble to a fitness studio to help you burn off the extra calories gained from eating at the hotel’s in-house trend restaurant.
Like the Villa Samadhi, which comes next up on this list, the PARKROYAL has event space open for hire, meaning that if you’d rather hold an event in the center of the city than on the outskirts, then this is most absolutely the place for you.
Villa Samadhi Singapore by Samadhi
Coming in as an adults-only resort-like building with luxury as its middle name, the Villa Samadhi Singapore is a truly unique place, combining the best aspects of the luxury hotels on this list with a different, looser approach to accommodation altogether.
Whereas many of the other hotels on this list find themselves in one of the many skyscrapers that line Singapore’s skyline, the Villa Samadhi is instead a regular, long building with a chic design and warm, inviting appeal. If you’re looking for a break from the city while you rest or to catch that by the water feel at the same time as being able to relax away from the public eye, then this is the hotel for you.
The Villa Samadhi is the unique experience out of all of those offered by the queer hotels on this list and is sure to be amazing no matter how you choose to enjoy it. In our opinion, the best way to experience Villa Samadhi would be as a couple, as that is what the Villa markets itself for, and many of the complimentary services serve as wonderful building stones towards the romantic getaway of a lifetime.
If you want to have a special time with a special person in your life, then the Villa Samadhi is the place for you. The Villa even has room for events, so if you’re planning a birthday, a wedding, or even just a get-together, there’s sure to be enough room for just about everyone.
The only slight downside to the Villa Samadhi is that it’s relatively separated from the metropolitan areas of Singapore, but this can also be viewed as an upside, depending on how you feel about exploring the urban jungle.
Marina Bay Sands
Just as we started this list with a five-star hotel, it seems right to finish it with another. The Marina Bay Sands has a lot of similarities to share with the M Hotel at the beginning of this list, given that they’re both high-rise luxury hotels with wonderful amenities lists and a focus on business comfort, but the Marina Bay Sands is set apart by the fact that it belongs to an entirely different neighborhood altogether.
The area in which the Marina Bay Sands finds itself is called the Downtown Core – a hub of cultural and artistic fanfare that consists of a vast amount of old British buildings and museums.
Nowadays, the bay that the Downtown Core encompasses is world-famous as Marina Bay – a stunning urban paradise with skyline views that could make other cities hide in jealousy. One of the most well-known nearby destinations is the ArtScience Museum – a contemporary building that houses a wide range of intriguing science exhibits and technological phenomena.
The Marina Bay Sands has its pool, fitness center, and spa amenities just like the M Hotel, and it also has an in-house restaurant that is quite well-reviewed in itself, but it is the sheer size of its rooms and views over the Marina Bay that guests have from their balconies that sets this hotel above all other competition.
On top of that, Marina Bay Sands is also explicitly marked as LGBTQ-friendly, which is always a plus, especially in a city like Singapore, where it is not the norm for hotels to do so. That extra mile of reassurance truly puts the cherry on top of the cake that is the Marina Bay Sands, and – even given its price tag – this makes it one of the best hotels on this list.
