- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021Just buy this—NOW! Although I can only review from the perspective of a parent of an LGBTQIA+ person, I can’t think of ANYONE who shouldn’t read this. Who doesn’t benefit from a better understanding of humanity and our differences? Teachers, doctors, pastors, brain health professionals, parents—everyone! This should be required reading.
This has increased my understanding for my teenage child whom I love dearly. It is important to read this not only to help any LGBTQIA+ person in your life, but to help you understand others and yourself.
Another amazing thing was how my son reacted when he found me reading this and we were able to start a very meaningful conversation. It means a lot to him that I am trying to learn and better understand his journey. READ IT.
I decided to tackle the vocabulary pages at the beginning first because I feel it’s important to understand. TRY NOT TO BE OVERWHELMED by completely understanding the terms presented at the beginning of the book. Read through them, and just refer back when you need to and it becomes much clearer as you go on.
I appreciate the vulnerability of this author and how she presents her material. I can’t imagine this was easy to write—on so many levels, but I can guess the joy she gets from helping so many people more than makes up for it!
I also need to mention—I have a short attention span, so I appreciate that this book is written in easy to tackle sections, with interesting illustrations! Great author and illustrator.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2016This was so wonderful! A fantastic crash course in LGBT+ terms, identities, and concepts. I consider myself fairly well versed in gender and sexuality but I still learned a ton about identities I had never even heard of before. I love how careful Ashley Mardell was to always make sure she was in conversation with people who identify with the terms she's defining, getting personal anecdotes as often as possible.
I also love and really respect how open she was about the information she didn't know, didn't have a source for, or might be wrong about. I mean obviously she did a truly impressive amount of research on this book but since sexuality and gender are such complex topics that mean different things to everyone it's hard to nail down a specific definition that everyone's happy with for a lot of the terms. She was very thorough in making sure to explain all sides of the argument when it came to controversial terms. She was also very open about when she was not in the position to define terms that were not hers and she couldn't find people who DID identify within the community those terms belonged to (specifically this was in regards to gender identities that belong to specific cultures such as two-spirit).
She's also very open to discussion about the book and feedback that she can incorporate into a sequel or fix later (maybe in a later edition? Or I think she also has a Tumblr she's set up for any corrections or additions that need to be made). Sexuality and gender are such difficult and complex topics that I have so much respect towards Ashley for taking on this incredible project and being so open to the input of others and criticism. She made it very clear in the book that she was not writing it alone. She had practically an entire army of people helping her edit, fact check, and contributing stories which I think is so, so important in books like this.
This is truly a wonderful book and I cannot recommend it enough for anyone who is trying to figure out their own sexuality/gender, trying to find the right label for them, trying to understand a loved one's experiences, or just interested in learning! Seriously, bravo Ashley.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2020This book is a wonderful guide through the complexities of identity. As a future sex therapist and educator, only at the start of my journey, I really needed an overview of what identities exist within the LGBTQIA+ community. I must admit, I was hesitant to read this book at first. I felt somehow that I wasn’t ready enough. Like I had to be more of an ally, I had to be gayer than I am, etc. but instead I realized that all I had to do was sit and listen. It helped to not only broadened my perspective on my own sexuality/identity, but also it made me really want to start listening to more people’s stories. I’m glad that it wasn’t just a dictionary of definitions, but instead a compilation of experiences as well as vocabulary. Since reading I’ve felt like I can be more immersed in LGBTQIA+ spaces than I used to feel I could. I feel a lot freer that way, and excited to learn more! I’m sure since the book’s publishing there have been a whole host of changes within the community, but this was an excellent start. If you’re doubting buying this book, I wouldn’t second guess yourself. It’s well worth the read. I wish I had something like this years ago
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2023I needed this for class. It’s very informative. Not really a book that you read, necessarily. Like, not a story, it’s just descriptions, definitions, and information.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2023This book was incredible! I was already familiar with most of the vocabulary that Ash introduces in this work, but it was still super interesting to get insight from people who identify with the words that they described in the book. Even if I wasn't already familiar, I know that the set up of the book is *very* user friendly. There are lots of footnotes explaining some of the words on the page and giving further explanations of some of the nuances of the book. I was *so* excited to finally get my hands on it. I have wanted a copy of this book for *years*, ever since I first found out about it really. I finally had some extra money to put towards getting it. It did not disappoint. I am *so* happy with it and will add it to my list of resources that I have worked to put together for my friends who want to learn more about the community in one way or another. It is such a good, easy read and would be good for anyone to get their hands on if you want to learn more.
I got it and read it in less than 24 hours. I have been raving about it so much that my girlfriend asked to read it once I finished it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating journey through the terminology of sex and gender.
I love this book. However reviewing it while my head is still spinning from the sheer amount of information is not easy. I think everyone should read this if only to appreciate how nuanced and diverse are sex and gender. I went into the book a member of the LGBT community and suddenly found myself in the LGBTQIA+ community and it's fascinating. I would love anyone who thinks they are straight to read this with an open mind, they will learn a lot, they may even wonder whether 'straight' is aa adequate description of anyone they know.

5.0 out of 5 stars promotes understanding and respect
The ABC‘s of LGBT+ by Ashley Mardell, now Ash Hardell, is basically a modern sex education book. It is a guide and lexicon (with personal comentary) of the different genders, sexual and other attractions and much more.
The author, Ash Hardell, is a YouTube star and one main topic of her YouTube channel is everything LGBT+-related. In this book he talks to the reader as a friend and guides them through the jungle of ideas, labels and definitions of the LGBT+ world in a very respectful and esteeming way. Their informal style gives the impression that they are really talking (not writing) to you.
One of his main messages are that it is sometimes hard to understand identities that you do not share. Therefore, she gives other people (bloggers, youtubers) a voice by citing how they would themselves describe their own identity and by letting them tell their stories.
The book is filled with beautiful drawings, graphs and photos, it is a pleasure to the eye. But it is a pleasure to touch, too, because the cover of the book is not only artistically styled but also made of a very soft material. It is a pleasure to simply hold the book in your hands. This contributes to the reading experience.
The intended audience for the book is obviously young readers. On the back of the book, it says that it is intended for questioning teens, teachers or parents. Well, I am neither of these and I still thoroughly enjoyed the book in every way. I have learned that there actually is a word for what I identify as.
I think that this book should be used in every sex ed class as those classes mostly neglect other genders than female and male and other orientations than hetero, homo and bi, if they even mention the last two. This guide promotes a world that is less of a place of prejudice and more of a place of understanding and respect.
