Salvador is fascinating and interesting for all the reasons you probably already know. There is much to do and see.
The only downsides are the high humidity and heat which makes day time explorations a bit taxing and safety issues. I found the main tourist locations to be well policed and safe, but if you stray from these you must be very careful. Ideally be in the company of local Brazilians who can help navigate the city safely.
I loved Casa da Mae in Rio Vermelho, great atmosphere, awesome music, nice food and safe.
I found the local people more reserved and more challenging to connect with than in Sao Paulo. I sense this is due to the 'tourist' nature of the city.

Carnival in Salvador, Bahia is a must! You'll have to experience it for yourself. My favorite town was Rio Verlehmo, Ubers are affordable, and motorbikes, are the way to go. I enjoyed walking, you get to experience more of their stores, restaurants.

Salvador is an incredible place.
Salvador is an incredible place. Lots of history, culture and friendly people. Would definitely recommend as a destination. Just be sure to have some basic Brazilian Portuguese phrases handy, as English is not widely spoken at all.

We were warned by everyone, including hotel staff and friends, that Salvador is a dangerous place. This made it difficult for us to enjoy the city's beauty without any concerns. However, we decided to take a City Tour with a group to learn more about the city and identify the places we wanted to visit again. The city tour gave us a better understanding of the city, which helped us appreciate it more. Go to Pelourinho, Igreja do Bonfim and Farol da Barra.

We had an idea that this place was beautiful, but it exceeded our expectations. Every street made beuatiful pictures, there was a lot of history, music and dancing. At first, the hsitorical area felt very touristy but there are ways to get a more authentic experience. We will recommend to all of our friends traveling in Brazil to make a stop in Salvador.
The staff was so incredibly friendly! They were ready to answer any question and help in any way. The location is right in the center of historic Salvador, so you can get most places by foot.
The atmosphere and design is very charming- you feel you’ve been transported back in time.
One of my favorites was the incredible breakfast! It is made with pride, love, and care. You have to get the artisan bread! I don’t usually like bread that much, but this bread is great (with butter and homemade marmalade!)
I have stayed in many hotels around the world, but this hotel was one of the best i have stayed in. The staff are incredible here. They are so helpful and polite and will do anything for you. The breakfast and the food is superb. The rooms are icredible, actually, the biggest bed ive ever slept in! But also the location is great for those who want to explore the cultural richness of a city like Salvador. Do not hesitate in booking this hotel, you will not regret it
Perfect location in Salvador right on Praia de Porto de Barra with nice bars and food options but everything becomes quiet later in the evening. The hostel is really great value especially for this location and the staff are welcoming and made everything very easy. The atmosphere is similar to a big share house rather than a modern hostel chain which also made for a nice experience. We had a great time in Salvador and would stay here again if we return. Thanks!
The room was simply decorated, but again very cosy with the black and white accents and the plant there.
The size of the room was also perfect.
Unfortunately, it rained a lot during our stay in Salvador, but that did not stop us from exploring.
And yes, sometimes watching movies from our comfortable bed.
The hotel staff and owner were very friendly. Ismael in particular could speak excellent English. And we are curious about the result of his test ;-)
We had a wonderful stay at Bahiacafe and would recommend it to any easy-going traveler in Salvador. It would have been helpful to have some clothing storage (drawers/dresser/shelves) as we were two people staying for a week, but we found a solution and it wasn't a big problem. LOVELY breakfast room, very attentive and courteous staff, would stay again without hesitation. (We had a/c and ceiling fan, which was fantastic -- but not all rooms do.)
The staff are all very friendly and welcoming
The hostel is also 5 minutes walk from Pelourinho Square so perfect for exploring the old town of Salvador.
The breakfast was good and I liked the fresh fruit and juices lthough I thought some of the things could be labelled as they are traditional Bahian dishes and a foreigner obviously won't know what they are (sweet or savoury).
This is a satisfyingly simple, clean, frugal hotel in a good area of Salvador. It’s not luxurious but it doesn’t try to be and it is priced for what it is. Nice swimming pool and gym. It’s in a “practical” part of Salvador, which is just fine. About a 20 min cab ride (which isn’t expensive) to places like Pelourinho and Rio Vermelho. We felt safe, secure, clean and comfortable.
There's absolute no reason for the lower score of this place. Location is one of the best in town and the price is also extremely competitive. The room was dated and some of the furniture needs renovation, but everything was clean, air conditioning was working fine and the shower had good hot water. Swimming pool and facilities were great and I can only recommend this hotel.
Our 4th floor room had a beautiful, ocean view. In fact, my favorite part of this hotel was the location, right off the beach with instant access to the bus lines right off Rua Paciencia (Patience Street). A short walk takes you to the town plaza for food options, or to Patience Beach, which is well worth it. The room was simple and clean, and what a bargain !
The aesthetics of the hotel, the architecture and the art all over the hotel was wonderful to see and live in.
The Spa is intimist and good good money for value
The breakfast was delicious and various
The love music performed by talented musicians in front of the bar was delightful.
On the top of that, the staff was reactive and extremely pleasant.
This is the second time I stayed in this hotel and I'll most likely stay again when in Salvador. Having lived in Itapoan I'm familiar with the area and love the hotel location. It's across from a nice beach and has its own luxurious pool in addition to a top rated restaurant. Close to the airport and super friendly staff make this place a no brainer.
Was the best location for us, close to all touristic places, was not difficult or expensive to get an Uber to get to centre of town.
I’m front of Barra beach which is the best of the city and surrounded by many good restaurants and bars.
I would definitely stay here if I come back to salvador.
The team is very welcoming and sweet. The rooms are clean and have air-conditioning, very important for the insanely hot summer of Salvador. The facilities are good and convenient, breakfast is simple but tasty, and the atmosphere is quiet, good place to work.
Great location, super friendly and attentive staff, good shower, very comfortable beds.
After years of staying at Victoria Marina, literally across the street, I found my new favorite. Hotel Bahía do Sol.
The hotel is very well located in the Pelourinho district. The room is very spacious with a great view from the balcony. It is very clean and has a well functioning AC since it was very hot outside.
Very comfortable and well kept hotel. Friendly staff and excellent grounds.
One of the best hotels i stayed in Salvador. highly recommend if you can afford to stay a bit away from the city center.
Everything was perfect. Beautifully rebuilt old colonial houses converted into an exceptional hotel in the center of old Salvador. A must if you are visiting Salvador.
Everything was great! Excellent communication with the owner! Having filtered water was a nice touch as you can not drink the tap water in Brazil! Awesome views!
