The New York Times bestseller
Gloria Steinem had an itinerant childhood. Every fall, her father would pack the family into the car and they would drive across the country, in search of their next adventure. The seeds were planted: Steinem would spend much of her life on the road, as a journalist, organizer, activist, and speaker. In vivid stories that span an entire career, Steinem writes about her time on the campaign trail, from Bobby Kennedy to Hillary Clinton; her early exposure to social activism in India; organizing ground-up movements in America; the taxi drivers who were "vectors of modern myths" and the airline stewardesses who embraced feminism; and the infinite contrasts, the "surrealism in everyday life" that Steinem encountered as she travelled back and forth across the country. With the unique perspective of one of the greatest feminist icons of the 20th and 21st centuries, here is an inspiring, profound, enlightening memoir of one woman's life-long journey.

About the author
Gloria Marie Steinem (born March 25, 1934) is an American feminist, journalist, and social and political activist who became nationally recognized as a leader and spokeswoman for the feminist movement in the late 1960s and early 70s.
She was a columnist for New York magazine and a founder of Ms. magazine. In 1969, she published an article, "After Black Power, Women's Liberation," which brought her to national fame as a feminist leader.
In 2005, Steinem, Jane Fonda, and Robin Morgan co-founded the Women's Media Center, an organization that works "to make women visible and powerful in the media."
Steinem currently travels internationally as an organizer and lecturer and is a media spokeswoman on issues of equality.

My own experiences following Steinem’s adventures began back in the 1970s, when she co-founded Ms. Magazine…and when her feminist philosophies led me and many of my friends into consciousness-raising groups, where we found our voice. In many ways, I can point to my own growth as an independent woman because of leaders like Steinem, who showed us the way, speaking calmly and insightfully despite the hatred of extremists. I clearly recall how I felt as I listened to her speak in the early 1970s, when she toured university campuses and arrived at the one I was attending. She became the iconic voice of my generation, the ideal and rational tribute to what could be if we were brave enough to try.
My Life on the Road reveals much about how Steinem’s sphere of influence grew, as she shared how she feared public speaking, but eventually discovered her fears could be lessened when she began telling her stories and also listening to those of others. She found her energy in listening and in figuring out shared solutions.
Anecdotes about her experiences fill the pages of this captivating book, and kept me reading, hoping to learn more. Each section includes parts that go back and forth through time, in a non-linear fashion, illustrating the points of each one. In some ways, it felt as though there was so much information that it will take another reading to fully grasp what she had to say. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this tome for followers of Steinem’s work, as well as for those who are curious. 5 stars.
The subject of the book was very eye opening and interesting because it's about how Gloria made a difference in the world by traveling. She is a very powerful woman who spoke her mind and didn't let anything stop her. She believed women should have the same rights as men and I believe that too, so do a lot of people in this world, but she actually did something to try to make that change by being a spokeswoman for the feminist movement. This book is encouraging because Gloria had a dream and actually pursued it and I feel like a lot of people in this world don't think they can accomplish the things they want too, but this book is a story of her journey and how she made her dreams happen.
I would recommend this book to any women particularly because this book is about Gloria's strong feelings for equality between men and women and being a women, I think we all should care about that a little. She spoke at many different huge events including the National Women's Conference just to speak her mind about how we should be treated equally and that is amazing. I am not as passionate as Gloria is about the equal rights movement but the book has opened my eyes to how important it was and how I should be more knowledgeable of things that go on that contribute to the way I live my life.
I also would recommend this book to people who have a passion for traveling because a lot of people want to travel but feel like they can't because it's too expensive. Gloria's father in the book is an example of how it is possible to spend a life traveling if you really want too and how he traveled the cheap way.
I am happy I read this book because it made me look at life in a different perspective; in a better way. The book opened my eyes to what pursuing a dream really is and even though it's not easy, it's possible. I also learned a lot about events that happened in the past that had to do with equality. I was only familiar with these events before I read the book but after reading it I have a more detailed description of what they were like and how important they were because they affected the way I live my life today. I think overall this is a great book to read because it's very inspiring!
