Spirited Kilkenny was Ireland’s capital in the Middle Ages and although many monuments remain from back then, it’s now best known for the 'craic'. Kilkenny cream ale flows in pubs forming part of its legendary nightlife and tours of Smithwick’s showcase Ireland’s oldest operating brewery, on grounds containing the St Francis Abbey ruins.
Kilkenny has the most medieval churches in Ireland. Dating to the 13th-century are the Black Abbey and St Canice’s Cathedral, next to the Round Tower - the only remains of a 9th-century monastery founded by the saint.
Medieval streets, inns and wall remnants still stand, but the most impressive attraction is Kilkenny Castle, in large gardens by the River Nore. The 3-turreted fortress was a former home of the once powerful Butler family.
The Parade leads from here past high street shops to The Tholsel – the porticoed town hall. The Elizabethan merchants’ residence Rothe House is in a similar style. Wandering the colourful streets you can’t fail to notice buildings named after cats, a reference to the residents’ dogged determination. Local hurling team The Cats play at Nowlan Park, and the city hosts the annual Cat Laughs comedy festival, amongst others.
Booking.com’s Kilkenny accommodation includes hotels with spas and pools, and city centre guest houses near the train station.
Very nice and pleasant town to walk around. Castle has contemporary renovations in most parts. We had a bad experience with Rossiters Shoe Repairs in Butterslip Lane with a shoddy and expensive shoe repair (glueing only, lasted for one day!) Historic sites (including Rothe House, St Canices Cathedral and Black Abbey) were easily accessible and well worth visiting.
Max the Miller's Pub worth a visit for Irish music and meals.

It is an absolutely delightful town full of interesting independent shops and places to eat. The motorised train tour was most enjoyable with a very entertaining driver/guide. We travelled by car from Dublin and were seriously impressed by the main roads compared with the UK.

There was so much history packed into the centre of town from the Castle at one end of the Medieval Mile to St Canice's Cathedral at the other end. It is all very accessible and interesting. We were not impressed with the Left Bank Gastro Pub but had a beautiful dinner at Petronella where the food was delicious and the service impeccable.

Kilkenny is a wonderful town with friendly people and a lot of history. The castle is fascinating along with the two churches it makes up the 'Medieval Mile' - a walk and learning worth doing. Plenty of history and restaurants and bars. Originally only went there because I like the beer but it has so much more to offer and really enjoyed the time there.

For us one day was enough to see what we wanted.
For us one day was enough to see what we wanted. We visited the castle, took the road train which was great and had a nice dinner at Langton’s where we stayed the night. There were several restaurants I could still have tried, and if you had other things you wanted to see in the area, it could be a good base.

Beds were very big and comfy which is a great bonus. The staff make this hotel....from the reception staff, bar staff (night porter was lovely and friendly) and the staff in the breakfast room they were all fantastic.
Fabulous location right by the river in Kilkenny city centre. Awesome terraces in the summer. Real old school, large hotel bar, so stylish. Like from a movie from the beginning of the 20th century. Large and comfortable rooms. Really tasty breakfast. Super friendly staff. Good parking in the yard. Excellent stay.
